Drug Addiction Rehab

Drug addiction rehab is part of the treatment process for drug addiction. For people with a drug addiction the treatment involves two parts. First an initial drug detox, possibly with medical supervision. And then a period of drug addiction rehab or rehabilitation. Drug addiction rehab consists of counselling and learning activities to help people adjust to a life without drugs. Drug rehab will most commonly be given at drug rehab centres. These drug rehabilitation centres provide a structured programme of educational, psychological and social therapy, which aims at preparing the former drug addict to cope better with a drug-free  life back in society. The length of time for drug addiction rehab is typically between one to nine months.

Drug addiction rehab, commonly referred to as rehabilitation, is a structured and comprehensive process aimed at helping individuals overcome their dependence on drugs. The primary goal of rehab is to address both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction, allowing individuals to break free from the destructive cycle of substance use.

Connect Confidentially

Rehabs provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can receive various types of treatments and therapies to address their addiction. These treatments may include detoxification, counselling, behavioural therapies, group support sessions and medication-assisted therapy if required.

Types of Rehabs

Addiction, a chronic condition, can be managed and overcome with time, incorporating a range of supportive treatments. The recovery process often begins with supervised detoxification, followed by outpatient and/or residential care and extends into various aftercare efforts, including relapse prevention. Rehabilitation centers provide trained staff to support patients, address co-occurring mental health issues and offer guidance for maintaining a drug-free life.

Inpatient

Inpatient or residential addiction treatment offers continuous care and support with patients staying at the facility for varying durations depending on their needs. This level of care is recommended for individuals struggling to manage recovery independently, those not benefitting from outpatient treatment or those in unsupportive environments. It’s also suitable for those with co-occurring disorders, prior relapses or needing medication management. Reasons for residential treatment include increased focus on recovery, clinical oversight, history of severe withdrawal and other medical or mental health issues. Patients may transition to outpatient therapy once sufficient progress is achieved.

Outpatient

Outpatient addiction treatment allows patients to live at home while attending sessions at a treatment center. There are different levels of outpatient programs, including standard outpatient, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). IOP offers structured treatment with various services like medication management and therapy making it suitable for individuals in early recovery who need support. PHP is more intensive than IOP but less so than residential programs, providing thorough assessment and personalised treatment plans with support from trained staff such as nurses, counsellors and physicians.

Sober Living

Sober living homes offer a supportive environment for individuals in addiction recovery, promoting a substance-free lifestyle with strict rules against substance use. These homes serve as a transitional living option between intensive treatment and independent living. Residents benefit from continued structure and support, often living with others who are also committed to sobriety. Participation in therapy, support groups and community resources is encouraged, creating long-term recovery.

Treatment levels vary, starting with medical detoxification for withdrawal management from substances like opioids and alcohol, which alone is insufficient without further comprehensive rehabilitation. Post-treatment, an aftercare plan is developed to support ongoing recovery. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has established criteria for determining the appropriate level of care for individuals with addiction and co-occurring conditions, ranging from outpatient services to intensive inpatient services. Diagnosis of a substance use disorder (SUD) involves meeting specific criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), 5th Edition, including impaired control, social impairment, risky use and pharmacological criteria. Effective addiction treatment is complex, requiring a comprehensive plan for successful recovery.

Detoxification is often the first step in drug addiction rehab. It involves eliminating the presence of drugs from your body while medically managing withdrawal symptoms. This important phase prepares you for the subsequent stages of treatment, as it helps remove the physical dependence on drugs.

Counselling and behavioural therapies play a significant role in drug addiction rehab. They help you understand the root causes of your addiction, develop coping mechanisms and learn healthier ways to manage cravings and triggers. These therapies can be conducted individually or in a group setting and are beneficial in improving self-awareness, communication skills and personal growth.

Group support sessions, such as 12-step programs, allow individuals in drug addiction rehab to connect with others who have gone through similar experiences. These sessions provide a sense of community and offer additional support and guidance during the recovery process.

When necessary, medication-assisted therapy may be incorporated into drug addiction rehab. This form of treatment involves the use of FDA-approved medications, alongside behavioural therapies to manage cravings, reduce withdrawal symptoms and prevent relapse.
