Lortab

Lortab is a partially artificial opioid drug that originates from opiates codeine and thebaine. It is commonly used to relieve severe pain but can also be misused due to its addictive nature.

Lortab is often discussed as it has been a cause of concern for individuals struggling with substance abuse. It contains a combination of hydrocodone (an opioid) and acetaminophen (a non-opioid pain reliever).

Misusing Lortab by deviating from prescribed directions can quickly lead to tolerance, necessitating an increased dosage for the same effect and potentially accelerating the onset of physical dependence. Dependence is characterised by a need to consume Lortab to feel normal and avoid withdrawal symptoms with tolerance and withdrawal serving as key indicators of addiction.

This could result in an uncontrollable compulsion to use Lortab despite knowing its harmful consequences, including the risk of a potentially fatal opioid overdose. The physical symptoms of Lortab abuse range from headaches and drowsiness to more severe conditions like seizures and coma, while psychological symptoms include mood swings, anxiety and an intense craving for the drug. These cravings are driven by Lortab’s effect on dopamine release in the brain, which can lead to permanent changes in the brain’s reward pathways over time.

The dangers of Lortab abuse extend beyond immediate health risks to include long-term effects such as relationship problems, financial stress, legal issues and cognitive impairments, culminating in a reduced quality of life and possibly a lower life expectancy. Addiction to Lortab, classified according to the severity outlined in the DSM5-TR, poses the primary risk with both short-term effects like sedation and respiratory depression and long-term consequences that can severely impact an individual’s personal and professional life. The CDC highlights the dangers of both short-term and long-term opioid abuse, underlining the importance of recognising and addressing opioid use disorder to mitigate these extensive health and social implications.

Unfortunately, many countries have witnessed a significant rise in opioid addiction cases partly due to medications like Lortab. The addictive properties of opioids are concerning as they can lead to dependency and withdrawal symptoms when stopped abruptly.

If you or someone you know is struggling with Lortab addiction, seeking help from a rehab or addiction treatment center is essential. These facilities offer various evidence-based therapies and treatments to help individuals overcome their addiction to Lortab and other opioids.
