PCP

Phencyclidine (PCP) is an addictive substance that alters the brain’s chemical composition, leading to feelings of joy and perceived clarity of thought. The effects of PCP manifest quickly, within 2 to 5 minutes if injected or smoked and last up to 30 minutes. When swallowed, effects appear in about 30 minutes with intense side effects emerging 2 to 5 hours later.

Users become dependent on PCP for its ability to induce altered states of consciousness, sensory distortions or pseudo-spiritual experiences. Side effects include mood changes, poor coordination and symptoms that vary with the dose size. Common symptoms of PCP addiction include delusions, confusion, hallucinations, euphoria, exaggerated strength, increased heart rate and blood pressure, numbness, detachment, rapid respiration, memory loss, physical and psychological distress, anxiety, paranoia, seizures, muscle cramps, vomiting, dehydration, loss of coordination, extreme fear, panic and aggression.

The experience of using PCP is unpredictable and varies greatly, often depending on the user’s mental state before intake. Long-term abuse can lead to severe effects like suicidal thoughts, mania, flashbacks and social isolation. PCP is particularly dangerous when combined with alcohol or other depressants, as it can cause respiratory distress or arrest, potentially resulting in death.

Individuals seeking treatment for PCP addiction frequently require care for co-occurring disorders, as PCP addiction often exists alongside other mental health issues and substance use disorders. When undergoing treatment for PCP abuse, assessments are conducted to identify and provide services for potential accompanying disorders, such as anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, depressive disorders and other substance use disorders.
