Vivitrol

Vivitrol, an injectable form of naltrexone, is used to treat alcohol and opioid dependencies. As an opioid antagonist, it works by reducing cravings for alcohol and blocking the pleasurable effects of opioids by acting on the brain’s opioid receptors. This helps in reducing the amount of alcohol consumed by those who haven’t quit drinking and prevents relapse in opioid users by mitigating cravings.

Vivitrol’s exact mechanism in promoting sobriety isn’t fully understood but its ability to block the emotional rewards of alcohol consumption is well recognised. Unlike daily oral addiction treatments, Vivitrol is administered monthly by a healthcare professional. Approved by the FDA since 2006 for alcohol and since 2010 for opioid dependence, it’s effective when combined with counselling and psychosocial support.

Notably, Vivitrol is non-addictive and doesn’t create a high or dependence making it safe to discontinue without withdrawal symptoms. However like other medicines, it can cause side effects such as dizziness, constipation, sleeplessness and nausea.

Vivitrol should be viewed as part of a holistic recovery program. It addresses the physical aspect of addiction but doesn’t tackle underlying emotional and mental issues. Comprehensive treatment, including counselling and support for reintegration into work and home life, is crucial. Relying solely on medication for recovery might align with the misconception of finding external chemical solutions to addiction, whereas true recovery encompasses addressing internal emotional and mental challenges.
